General Information:

The Counseling Center (CC) at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for a Victim Advocate/Staff Clinician. Victim Advocacy Services (VAS) are a separate and distinct service from counseling services; however, they operate under the umbrella of the CC. In addition to providing advocacy services, advocates participate in a variety of CC activities and services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Victim Advocate is an 11-month continuing position that will provide advocacy services for students. In addition to providing advocacy services and raising awareness for VAS services, the position may include the opportunity to provide short-term individual, group and crisis counseling, consultation services and outreach programming, and training and supervision of graduate students and clinicians in training.
Responsibilities associated with this role include:

Provide advocacy to student survivors of sexual violence, hate crime(s), and/or other interpersonal violence.
Collaborate with the CC's Sexual Trauma Empowerment Program (STEP) coordinator to ensure efficient, trauma informed care and referrals between services.
Consult with faculty, staff, and other relevant individuals on student cases as needed.
Maintain an awareness of the professional literature regarding victim advocacy and awareness and working to incorporate this information into the standards and practices of the Victim Advocacy services.
Participate in and/or co-chair various multidisciplinary teams (e.g. Sexual Assault Response Team, Coalition to End Sexual Violence, Coordinated Community Response Team).

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate must have a master's degree in psychology, counseling, education, social work or related field.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Preference for candidate to be licensed (or eligible for residency) as a Psychologist, Counselor, or Social Worker within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Preference for the candidate to have NACP Advocate Credentialing through the National Organization for Victim Assistance.
  • Training and/or experience in the provision of advocacy services.
  • Training and/or experience working with sexual assault, hate crime(s), and/or other interpersonal violence victims/survivors.
  • Training and/or experience working with college-aged population.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed display of high professional standards and practice.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure to prioritize and manage multiple complex clinical situations.
  • Proven skills of warm, trusting, and respectful care towards colleagues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy perspectives and relationships.
  • Experience collaborating with other departments, agencies, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
